Final exam taken, last paper turned in, most evaluations completed - what was the first thing I did? Drew a bath and began reading Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. It was recommended by practically every preacher we read in 'Preaching and Public Discourse' class AND I LOVE Anne Lamott.
I have never considered myself a writer - and I don't think Lamott's book is going to change that about me. However, in the first chapter she writes about... beginning to write. She encourages us to begin with what we know - our childhoods. I found myself WANTING to write down the plethora of details that were coming to mind. Stories and feelings from Kindergarten that I hadn't thought about in years!
My grandad began writing his life story shortly before he passed away. This discovery has been precious for my family. As I read this book I found myself thinking about how neat it would be if I began writing my life story - for family to have when I'm old and eventually no longer on this earth.
That was a neat thought as I began reading the book. The energy burst to do this has most definitely passed, but I still think it's a good idea. Maybe someday I'll begin my autobiography. Maybe someday I'll even finish this book.
