Music is a very important part of my life. As much as I love to sing, particularly harmonize, there is something that draws me into a good set of lyrics that I appreciate even more than the music. I have a good friend who can not relate to me. As a talented musician he appreciates the notes and harmonies and how the chords hit something deep in his soul (which I also love) but he rarely ever hears the lyrics.
The song below is written and sung by Brett Dennen. I copy/pasted the lyrics several weeks ago - the words must have struck me then. Now? I still like them - a lot - and I can currently relate to the first verse quite well since we are stuck in this eternal cycle of ice and snow out here in the Midwest. Anyway - this is not a current moment's inspiration but it was a moment's inspiration. I find it funny that the words don't seem to match the chipper music. Thoughts?
Yeah
In the womb of winter, summer seems a myth
In my desperation I throw my faith into the wind
Born to a world where it is a fight just to fit in
From the craddle to the grave, it never ends
Someday, someday in a cloud of gray
I will, I'll make my great escape
So many ways to walk upon the earth
I trace my footsteps to the place of my birth
So what do you do with all your precious time
So many ways in which to reach for the sky
Someday, someday in a cloud of gray
I will, I'll make my great escape
Someday, someday in a cloud of gray
I will, I'll make my great escape
Say, little bit by little bit, someday
I may be weary but I am not weak
I can sing a song of suffering
Maybe a song unsung is dancing on the tip of your tongue
My salvation's ahead of me
I can feel it calling me
I know that I, I know that I will be ready
Someday, someday in a cloud of gray
I will, I'll make my great escape
Someday, someday in a cloud of gray
I will, I'll make my great escape

It seems to me that the chipper music reflects the anticipation of this "great escape". It's something to look forward to, not dread or bemoan.
As for hearing the lyrics, I heard the sounds of the words but there was hardly any registering of meaning even with the lyrics in front of me. The sound of the song makes me want this Brett guy to be from some place in New England - Massachusetts or Connecticut probably.
Ah, Ben - I heard of Brett Dennen for the first time in good ole' Putney, Vermont. I'll have to google and see if he is, in fact, from New England.
Thanks for your thoughts!
P.S. - you're the "talented musician" in my post, btw - so I'm super grateful for your comment :)
